SN74HC164DR
Texas InstrumentsSN74HC164DR is a Texas Instruments 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register in SOIC-14, tape and reel — for GPIO expansion where a microcontroller runs out of pins: LED matrices, relay drivers and 7-segment displays. AND-gated serial inputs plus asynchronous clear give full control over data entry; 2V to 6V operation, 24 MHz clock and ±5.2 mA drive suit 5V and 3.3V logic. Selection advice: the DR suffix is SOIC-14 tape and reel for production — for breadboards use the N (PDIP) variant; unlike the 595 family this part has no output latch, so for glitch-free updates where outputs must change simultaneously, prefer the SN74HC595 instead. Cascade multiple 164s for wider outputs. Parameters verified against TI documentation.
